La Opala 6-Piece Square Dinner Plate Set, 270mm, White

Our review

This is a six-piece set of square dinner plates from La Opala, each measuring 270mm across and finished in white. The square shape gives a more contemporary table setting than the round plates most households already own, and the white surface keeps food looking clean and lets patterned bowls or side plates stand out. The glazing is fired under controlled conditions, which La Opala says makes it strongly resistant to scratches and abrasion, so everyday cutting and stacking should not dull the surface quickly. It suits someone setting up a first home, replacing a chipped set, or wanting a consistent look for daily family meals and casual hosting. Before buying, think about your cupboard space, since square plates need a little more room than round ones of similar width, and check that 270mm is the plate size you want rather than a smaller side plate. Compare with round porcelain or bone china sets if you prefer a traditional look, and with melamine if weight matters more than a ceramic feel. Available on Sokonia.
