This is a ceiling-mounted infrared sensor switch that turns lights on or off automatically when it picks up movement. Because it watches a full 360 degrees and can sense motion up to 8 metres away, it suits rooms where people come and go from different directions, such as corridors, stairwells, bathrooms, store rooms and shared passages. It is less useful in a small room where a narrower sensor would do the same job for less. Before buying, check that your light fitting and wiring suit a ceiling switch of this type, and think about the height you will mount it at, since coverage depends on placement. Compare it with PIR sensors that cover a limited angle, and with models that add a daylight threshold so lights stay off in bright conditions.
